A majority of American voters support legalizing psychedelics for therapeutic use, with 61% in favor, according to a University of California, Berkeley survey

Key Points

  • 161% of U.S. voters support therapeutic legalization of psychedelics
  • 256% favor FDA approval for prescription psychedelic use
  • 378% support easier access for psychedelic research
  • 4Personal experience with psychedelics influences support for policy reforms
  • 5Liberal voters show strongest support for therapeutic access to psychedelics

A recent survey conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, has revealed that a significant majority of American voters, 61%, support the legalization of psychedelics for therapeutic purposes. This landmark study sheds light on the growing acceptance of psychedelics as a viable option for mental health treatment. Additionally, 56% of respondents favor the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approving psychedelics for prescription use, indicating a shift in public opinion towards integrating these substances into mainstream medicine

The survey also highlighted strong support for psychedelic research, with 78% of participants advocating for easier access for researchers to study these substances. However, opinions on decriminalization were more divided, with 49% supporting the removal of criminal penalties for personal use and possession, and 44% endorsing the use of psychedelics for spiritual and religious purposes. These findings suggest a nuanced perspective among voters, who appear to differentiate between therapeutic and recreational use

Despite the support for therapeutic legalization, a considerable portion of respondents expressed reservations about psychedelics. Among those in favor of therapeutic use, 63% felt that psychedelics were not suitable for people like themselves, and 56% stated they had no personal interest in these substances. Moreover, 47% believed psychedelics were not beneficial for society, highlighting an ongoing stigma that may influence policy discussions

The survey further revealed that personal experience with psychedelics plays a crucial role in shaping opinions. Over half of the respondents (51%) reported a direct connection to psychedelic use, either personally or through someone they know. Those with firsthand knowledge were more likely to support policy reforms and hold positive views on psychedelics, except when it came to law enforcement perspectives. This suggests that personal exposure can significantly impact attitudes towards psychedelic policy changes

Political affiliation also influenced opinions, with liberal voters showing the highest support (80%) for therapeutic access to psychedelics, compared to 66% of moderates and 45% of conservatives. The survey found broad acceptance for using psychedelic therapy to treat terminal illnesses (80%), veterans (69%), and treatment-resistant depression and anxiety (67%). However, support waned for unrestricted access to psychedelic therapy for individuals over 21 (44%) and for treating substance addiction (45%)
