In a landmark decision, Antigua and Barbuda have legalized the cultivation of marijuana for sacramental use by the Rastafarian community. This move marks a significant shift in the Caribbean nation’s approach to cannabis, recognizing the cultural and religious importance of the plant to Rastafarians, who have historically faced persecution for its use

Ras Kiyode Erasto, a prominent Rastafarian priest, recalls the discrimination faced by his community, including being barred from schools due to their beliefs. The new legislation aims to rectify past injustices and promote inclusivity. Prime Minister Gaston Browne emphasized the government's commitment to accommodating diverse religious practices, stating, "We pride ourselves as an all-inclusive government."

The legalization follows a series of progressive steps, beginning with the decriminalization of marijuana in 2018 and its subsequent legalization for medicinal purposes. The recent decision grants legal licenses to Rastafarian groups, allowing them to grow marijuana for religious rituals without fear of legal repercussions. Ras Tashi, another Rastafarian leader, expressed relief and joy at the newfound freedom

Antigua and Barbuda’s decision sets a precedent in the Caribbean, surpassing the efforts of larger nations in the region. The country hopes to inspire others to adopt similar measures and foster a more accepting environment for Rastafarian practices. Despite the progress, the community continues to advocate for broader legalization, reflecting a global trend towards more lenient cannabis policies
