Calgary's executive committee has approved a proposal allowing cannabis sales at adult-only events, moving the decision to the city council for final approval. This change would enable cannabis retailers to apply for licenses to operate mobile units at events where minors are prohibited, aligning Calgary's regulations with those of Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC)
The current rules permit cannabis deliveries to such events but prohibit on-site sales, creating logistical challenges for retailers and event organizers. Ward 11 Councillor Kourtney Penner, who supports the bylaw change, emphasized that the proposal addresses distribution issues within the cannabis market. The committee's decision was narrowly passed with a 6-4 vote, despite opposition from some councillors who expressed concerns about the message it sends
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has raised concerns about the potential for increased intoxication due to the simultaneous sale of alcohol and cannabis at events. Dr. Brent Friesen, a medical officer of health, highlighted the risks of co-use leading to greater impairment and injury. In response, Penner argued that personal choice should prevail and suggested that AHS address these concerns with AGLC. The city council is set to make a final decision on April 29
