CBD Coating Extends Fresh Produce Shelf Life, New Study Shows

A new study reveals that a CBD coating can significantly extend the shelf life of fresh produce, offering a natural alternative to chemical preservatives

Key Points

  • 1CBD coating extends the shelf life of fresh produce
  • 2Study conducted by Thammasat University and Chulabhorn Research Institute
  • 3CBD's antioxidant and antimicrobial properties inhibit decay
  • 4Previous studies confirm CBD's effectiveness in preserving strawberries
  • 5Research offers a natural alternative to chemical food preservatives

A recent study published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces reveals that a thin, edible CBD coating can significantly extend the shelf life of fresh produce. The research, conducted by scientists from Thammasat University and the Chulabhorn Research Institute in Thailand, highlights the potential of cannabidiol (CBD) beyond its well-known medical and wellness applications

CBD, primarily recognized for its anxiety and pain-relieving properties, has also been found to possess antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities. These properties can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi responsible for the decay of fruits and vegetables. The study builds on this knowledge by exploring CBD's ability to naturally preserve fresh produce

The research team developed a CBD-based coating by combining CBD isolate with biodegradable polymers, creating nanoparticles that were then mixed with water and sodium alginate. Strawberries were dipped in this solution, followed by an ascorbic acid and calcium chloride bath, forming a gel-like coating. This process resulted in strawberries that retained their color and weight significantly longer than untreated ones when stored in open plastic containers at refrigerator temperatures

Previous studies, such as one published in 2021 in Postharvest Biology and Technology, have also demonstrated CBD's effectiveness in prolonging the shelf life of strawberries. That study showed that CBD oil applied directly to strawberries after harvest maintained their visual appeal and reduced microbial load compared to untreated fruit

The implications of this research are significant for the food industry, offering a natural alternative to chemical preservatives. As the demand for organic and sustainable food preservation methods grows, CBD's role could expand, providing both consumers and producers with a viable solution for reducing food waste
