Emerald Cup Introduces Terpene-Based Cannabis Classification System

The Emerald Cup introduces a terpene-based classification system to evaluate cannabis, enhancing understanding of quality beyond THC content

Key Points

  • 1Emerald Cup adopts terpene-based classification system for cannabis
  • 2New system focuses on terpene profiles, flavor, and effects
  • 3Aims to provide clearer cannabis evaluation beyond THC content
  • 4System tested at 2021-2022 Emerald Cup and California State Fair
  • 5Classification includes categories like 'Jacks + Haze' and 'OGs + Gas'

The renowned Emerald Cup competition is set to revolutionize the way cannabis is evaluated by introducing a new classification system based on terpene profiles. This annual event, which celebrates the best organically grown outdoor cannabis, will now categorize cannabis using universal criteria that assess terpene content, flavor, and effects. This shift aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of cannabis quality beyond the traditional THC-centric approach

Historically, cannabis potency and effects have been predominantly measured by THC content. However, recent scientific research highlights the significant role of terpenes in influencing the entourage effect, which is highly sought after by consumers. Despite this, the complexity of terpene names and their effects often adds confusion for consumers, who are already navigating a landscape filled with ambiguous strain names and varied THC/CBD percentages

The transition to this new system began in early 2021 when Emerald Cup co-producers Tim and Taylor Blake recognized the need for change. They assembled a team of experts, including scientists and former judges, to develop a terpene classification system to be used as the foundation for judging in their competition. This new approach is designed to reduce bias and provide a clearer framework for evaluating cannabis entries

The 2021-2022 Emerald Cup will serve as a testing ground for this innovative categorization method. By focusing on the chemovar, or the chemical makeup of each strain, the competition aims to create a fairer playing field. This system is a continuation of last year's efforts to classify cannabis by primary terpene content, leveraging data from over 250,000 terpene tests conducted by SC Labs since 2013

The newly established classes under this system include categories such as 'Jacks + Haze', 'Tropical + Floral', 'Sweets + Dreams', 'OGs + Gas', and 'Exotiques'. These names are intended to align with familiar industry terminology and enhance consumer understanding. Each class is further detailed with tasting notes, effects, and common strains, facilitating better consumer and industry adoption

This terpene-based classification system is not only set to redefine the Emerald Cup competition but also aims to influence the broader cannabis market. By providing a globally recognized framework similar to the wine industry, where varietals are judged against similar profiles, it seeks to standardize cannabis evaluation. The California State Fair Cannabis Awards will also implement this system, underscoring its potential for widespread adoption

The 2022 Emerald Cup awards will be announced on May 14 at the Green Street Festival in Los Angeles. With the deadline for entries set for February 25, the competition promises to showcase the best in cannabis innovation and quality. As the industry continues to evolve, this new classification system could pave the way for a more informed and sophisticated approach to cannabis consumption
