Majority of Americans Support Cannabis Legalization and Reclassification, YouGov Survey Reveals

A YouGov survey shows most Americans support cannabis legalization and reclassification, reflecting growing acceptance of its medical uses

Key Points

  • 154% of Americans support recreational cannabis legalization
  • 270% approve of reclassifying cannabis for research purposes
  • 376% believe in cannabis's legitimate medical uses
  • 4President Trump's order reclassifies cannabis to Schedule III
  • 5Reclassification aims to enhance medical research opportunities

A recent YouGov survey has highlighted strong support among Americans for the legalization of recreational cannabis, its medical use, and its reclassification at the federal level. Conducted with over 31,000 U.S. adults, the survey revealed that 54% of respondents favor legalizing recreational marijuana, with notable variations in opinion across political affiliations

The survey, published on December 22, 2025, also explored attitudes toward the reclassification of marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance. A significant 70% of respondents expressed approval for this reclassification, which would facilitate further research into cannabis's medicinal properties. This sentiment was echoed by 78% of Democrats, 69% of Independents, and 66% of Republicans

Additionally, the survey addressed beliefs about the medicinal uses of cannabis. A majority, 76%, indicated that marijuana has legitimate medical applications, with 43% asserting it definitely does, and 33% believing it probably does. The belief in cannabis's medical potential was strongest among Democrats at 84%, followed by Independents at 74% and Republicans at 73%

The survey results come shortly after President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the reclassification of cannabis. This move is expected to significantly impact the scope of medical research, as it allows studies to include real-world evidence and assess long-term health outcomes. "This reclassification order will make it far easier to conduct marijuana-related medical research," President Trump stated, emphasizing the potential for positive impacts on public health

The reclassification aligns with federal actions outlined in a fact sheet released on December 18, 2025, which detailed the implementation process for various agencies. This policy shift marks a pivotal moment in U.S. cannabis regulation, potentially paving the way for more comprehensive research and broader acceptance of cannabis's medical benefits
