Massachusetts voters who may have been misled into supporting a controversial initiative aimed at ending the state's legal cannabis industry are being advised to take action. The Massachusetts Cannabis Business Association (MCBA) has urged individuals who believe they were deceived into signing the petition for 'An Act To Restore Sensible Cannabis Policy' to contact their local town clerks. This initiative seeks to dismantle the state's $1.6 billion cannabis market by 2026 and has been marred by accusations of misleading tactics

David O’Brien, president and CEO of the MCBA, emphasized the importance of voters verifying their signatures if they were misled. 'Clerks do this every season, they know what to look for when it comes to questionable signatures,' O'Brien stated. He urged voters who signed under false pretenses to reach out to local clerks to have their signatures decertified. This advice comes in response to reports of deceptive practices by signature gatherers, who allegedly misrepresented the petition as supporting unrelated causes like housing or public safety

The campaign behind the initiative, linked to the Republican Party-connected Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts, claims to have gathered the necessary signatures to advance the proposal. The coalition needed at least 74,574 valid signatures by November 19 to proceed to the next phase of the ballot process. Despite accusations, coalition spokesperson Wendy Wakeman has denied any involvement in misleading tactics, suggesting that voters should take responsibility for not reading the petition before signing

O'Brien's criticism of the campaign's tactics highlights the underlying challenges faced by those opposing the initiative. He argued that the campaign's refusal to denounce deceptive practices indicates a lack of genuine support for repealing the state's cannabis laws. The Massachusetts cannabis industry, which is on track to exceed $1.6 billion in sales by 2025, is seen as a success story by many, evidenced by record sales reported by the state Cannabis Control Commission

The controversy underscores the broader implications for Massachusetts' cannabis market, which has been thriving since the legalization of adult-use cannabis. Retailers have reported $1.41 billion in sales through November 9, with monthly averages of $137.4 million. As the debate over the initiative continues, the MCBA and other industry advocates remain vigilant in protecting the interests of this burgeoning market. The outcome of this initiative could have significant repercussions for the state's economy and the broader cannabis industry
