Study Reveals Cannabis Use Doubles Heart Disease Mortality Risk

Cannabis users face double the risk of heart disease mortality, highlighting the need for health warnings and further research into its cardiovascular impact

Key Points

  • 1Cannabis use doubles heart disease mortality risk, study finds
  • 2Research analyzed data from 24 studies conducted between 2016 and 2023
  • 3Cannabis users also face higher risks of stroke and heart attacks
  • 4Experts call for health warnings and prevention measures
  • 5Further research needed to understand cannabis's cardiovascular impact

A recent study published in the journal Heart reveals that individuals who use cannabis or synthetic cannabinoids face a doubled risk of dying from heart-related issues compared to non-users. This alarming finding comes amidst increasing recreational use of cannabis across Europe, where it remains the most popular drug despite its illegal status in many countries. The study highlights the evolving potency and diversity of cannabis products, raising concerns about their health implications

The research, conducted by a French team, analyzed data from 24 studies between 2016 and 2023, involving participants aged 19 to 59. The results indicated not only a doubled mortality risk but also a 20% increased likelihood of stroke and a 29% heightened risk of heart attacks or acute coronary syndrome among cannabis users. Although most studies were observational and could not definitively establish causation, the comprehensive nature of this analysis underscores the potential cardiovascular risks associated with cannabis consumption

Experts Stanton Glantz and Dr. Lynn Silver from the University of California at San Francisco, who were not part of the study, emphasize the need for health warnings on cannabis products and measures to limit exposure to secondhand smoke. As cannabis laws become more lenient globally, they advocate for incorporating cannabis into cardiovascular disease prevention frameworks. The study's findings challenge the perception of cannabis as a low-risk substance, prompting calls for further research to understand the nuances of its impact on heart health
