Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has addressed allegations involving Tom Kruesopon, a suspect in illegal cannabis importation. Anutin emphasized that all actions must adhere to legal frameworks, dismissing any notion of favoritism due to Kruesopon's connections with the Bhumjaithai Party. He clarified that Kruesopon, while a friend, does not receive special treatment and must comply with strict regulations regarding cannabis importation
Anutin also refuted claims made by opposition MP Wayo Assawarungruang, who suggested that hospitals were given KPIs to establish cannabis clinics to maximize cannabis use. Anutin stated that medical treatment decisions remain at the discretion of individual doctors, and there are no government-imposed targets for cannabis clinic operations. He emphasized that the integration of cannabis into medical practice is managed by the National Health Security Office without undue influence from the ministry
In response to concerns about unlicensed cannabis activities, Anutin confirmed that the Ministry of Public Health has urged the National Police to take legal action against unauthorized research, export, or commercial processing of controlled herbs. The ministry's directive aims to strictly regulate the use of cannabis flowers, with a clear prohibition on sales for recreational use. Anutin reiterated that the primary focus of cannabis policy is health, not recreational consumption
