University of Georgia Study Reveals Widespread CBD Use Among College Students

A University of Georgia study finds nearly half of college students have tried CBD, using it to manage anxiety, stress, and sleep issues

Key Points

  • 1Nearly half of college students have tried CBD, according to a University of Georgia study
  • 2CBD is primarily used by students for anxiety, stress, and sleep management
  • 3The study surveyed 4,183 students, making it the largest of its kind on this topic
  • 4CBD is legal and easily accessible for students aged 18+ in most of the U.S
  • 5Gen Z is using CBD as a non-intoxicating way to cope with college pressures

In a groundbreaking study conducted by the University of Georgia, it has been revealed that nearly half of college students have experimented with CBD, with about one-third using it regularly. This study, which surveyed 4,183 undergraduate students, is the largest of its kind to explore CBD usage among this demographic. The findings highlight that students are turning to CBD primarily for managing anxiety, stress, and sleep issues, rather than for recreational purposes

Published in the journal Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy, the research underscores the intentional use of CBD by college students. Jennie Pless, the lead author and a doctoral student at UGA’s School of Social Work, emphasized that college life, often romanticized as carefree, is laden with stress due to new responsibilities and pressures. Pless noted that CBD offers a non-intoxicating way for students to cope with these challenges, making it a popular choice on college campuses

CBD's legal status and accessibility contribute to its popularity among students. In Georgia and most parts of the U.S., CBD can be legally purchased by individuals aged 18 and older, making it easily accessible online and in retail stores. Students reported that they were first introduced to CBD through friends at social gatherings, which led to continued use for stress relief and better sleep, with edibles being the preferred form due to their discreet and convenient nature

The study reflects a broader cultural shift among Gen Z, who are increasingly open about mental health issues while being cautious about substance use. CBD fits into this narrative as a non-addictive, non-intoxicating option that aligns with other wellness products like caffeine and melatonin. As Gen Z continues to navigate the complexities of modern college life, CBD appears to be an integral tool for managing mental health and academic pressures
