An Air Canada baggage handler has been charged after allegedly orchestrating an attempt to smuggle 66 kilograms of cannabis through Toronto Pearson International Airport. According to the RCMP, the case began on February 19 when the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) discovered two suitcases, each containing about 33 kilograms of cannabis, in the checked luggage of two German nationals preparing to board a flight to Germany

Police say the two travelers, who were not acquainted and were traveling separately, denied any knowledge of the bags when confronted by authorities. Upon investigation, officers determined that neither passenger had checked in the identical suitcases, and their names had been placed on the luggage tags without their knowledge. "Investigators determined an Air Canada employee working in the baggage room had placed luggage tags that included the 'unsuspecting passengers’ names' onto the suitcases that contained the cannabis," the RCMP reported

Both German citizens fully cooperated with the investigation and were released without charges. The Air Canada employee was arrested on March 12 and now faces charges of possession for the purpose of export and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. The accused was released on bail with conditions and is scheduled to appear in Brampton court on April 10

From the OG Lab newsroom perspective, this incident underscores the ongoing challenges cannabis legalization presents at international borders, particularly regarding illicit export attempts. The case also highlights the critical role of airport security and employee oversight in preventing the misuse of legal cannabis markets for illegal international trafficking. The outcome of this prosecution could set important precedents for both airport operations and cannabis industry compliance
