Majority of Americans Support Legal Cannabis Home Cultivation Amid Pesticide Concerns, Poll Finds

A new national poll shows 61 percent of Americans support legalizing home cannabis cultivation, driven by widespread concerns over pesticide contamination in commercial marijuana products

Key Points

  • 161 percent of Americans support legal marijuana home cultivation, according to a Harris Poll for Royal Queen Seeds
  • 272 percent of cannabis consumers are very concerned about pesticides in their products
  • 365 percent report that media coverage of tainted cannabis has increased their desire to grow their own
  • 467 percent of consumers would prefer pesticide-free cannabis even if it has lower THC
  • 5Recent polling shows cannabis use now outpaces cigarette smoking in the U.S

A new national survey reveals that 61 percent of Americans believe adults should be allowed to grow their own marijuana at home, reflecting broad support for home cultivation beyond just active cannabis consumers. The Harris Poll, commissioned by Royal Queen Seeds (RQS), highlights that public backing for home grows surpasses the 43 percent of Americans who report having consumed cannabis themselves. This suggests that the right to cultivate at home resonates even with those who may not intend to participate personally

The poll also underscores growing anxieties about the safety of commercially available cannabis. According to the findings, 72 percent of consumers are very concerned about the presence of pesticides in their cannabis products. Furthermore, 65 percent indicated that media reports about tainted marijuana have increased their interest in growing their own plants rather than purchasing from dispensaries

Health and safety concerns are also influencing consumer preferences, with 67 percent of cannabis users saying they would choose pesticide-free cannabis even if it contains lower THC levels compared to products grown with agrochemicals. "Consumers today are more informed and more intentional about what they put into their bodies," said Shai Ramsahai, president of RQS. "Blindly buying products just because of a high THC percentage is a fading trend. People want cannabis they can trust, and many are turning to home cultivation to take control over quality and safety."

The survey, conducted in March with 2,017 U.S. adults aged 21 and older, is part of a series of polls by RQS tracking evolving attitudes toward cannabis. Recent RQS data also found that 37 percent of respondents would consider gifting marijuana seeds for 4/20, while Gallup polling shows that cannabis use now outpaces cigarette smoking in the U.S. Notably, Gallup further reported that legalization status does not significantly impact marijuana usage rates across states, suggesting that criminalization does little to deter consumption

From the OG Lab newsroom perspective, the strong support for home cultivation aligns with increasing consumer demands for transparency and safety in cannabis products. This trend could prompt further policy changes as lawmakers respond to public health concerns and shifting market dynamics. The move toward home cultivation may also reshape how cannabis quality is regulated and perceived across the industry
