Thailand Allows Free Transport of 10kg Fresh Fruits at Select Airports
Thailand will allow free transport of up to 10 kg of fresh fruits in sealed boxes at select airports starting September 2026, excluding durian and major tourist hubs like Koh Samui.
Key Points
- 1Up to 10 kg of fresh, dry fruits can be carried free in special sealed boxes at certain Thai airports starting Sept 1, 2026.
- 2Durian and fruits packed in regular suitcases are not allowed under this scheme.
- 3Program runs for one year at select regional airports; major tourist airports including Koh Samui are excluded.
- 4The service targets locals rather than tourists, facilitating domestic fruit transport.
Starting September 1, 2026, Thailand will permit travelers to carry up to 10 kilograms of fresh fruits free of charge in special sealed boxes provided at certain airports. These fruits must be fresh and dry; durian is excluded from this allowance. The boxes are issued at the airport, and fruits packed in regular suitcases are not permitted under this rule.
This service will be available for exactly one year at a list of regional airports including Nan, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanulok, Loei, Udon Thani, and others primarily in northeastern and southern provinces. Notably, major tourist hubs such as Koh Samui, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, Phuket, and Chiang Mai are excluded from this program.
The initiative appears aimed more at residents or locals traveling domestically rather than tourists, possibly to facilitate the transport of local fruits across regions. While it may not impact visitors to Koh Samui directly, it reflects Thailand's ongoing efforts to support regional fruit producers and promote local agricultural products.
For those on Koh Samui, this means continuing to use standard luggage allowances for fruits when traveling. However, it’s a good sign of Thailand’s flexibility with fresh produce transport in many parts of the country. OG Lab’s takeaway: if you’re flying from a participating airport, look out for these special boxes at check-in to bring local fruits home easily.
