Bangkok police arrested three Vietnamese men and seized 1,685 cannabis plants in a warehouse raid, underscoring persistent illegal cultivation despite Thailand's regulatory reforms

Key Points

  • 1Police seized 1,685 cannabis plants and arrested three Vietnamese nationals in Bang Khun Thian district, Bangkok
  • 2The warehouse operation had an estimated value of 1.7 million baht and yielded approximately 168 kilograms of dried cannabis
  • 3Suspects were charged under Thai law prohibiting unlicensed commercial cannabis activities, facing up to one year in prison and a 20,000 baht fine
  • 4The case reflects ongoing regulatory challenges and enforcement in Thailand's cannabis sector

Bangkok police have dismantled a significant illegal cannabis operation in the Bang Khun Thian district, arresting three Vietnamese nationals and confiscating nearly 1,700 cannabis plants on December 17. Acting on a tip from a resident who reported a persistent cannabis odor, officers from the Crime Suppression Division, together with the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, launched a coordinated raid after obtaining a search warrant from the Thonburi Criminal Court

During the raid, authorities discovered Nguyen Duc Anh, 28, Do Van Bay, 27, and Dang Sy Tai, 35, inside the warehouse. The operation led to the seizure of 1,685 cannabis plants, each yielding about 100 grams of dried flower, for a total estimated weight of 168 kilograms and a street value of approximately 1.7 million baht. The suspects now face charges under Section 46 of the Thai Traditional Medical Knowledge Protection and Promotion Act, which prohibits unauthorized commercial activities involving controlled herbs such as cannabis

Violations of this law can result in penalties of up to one year in prison, a fine of 20,000 baht, or both. According to The Thaiger, "the law prohibits the unauthorised study, research, export, sale, or commercial processing of controlled herbs, including cannabis, without proper approval." Authorities noted that a similar case occurred in January when another Vietnamese national was detained for operating an indoor cannabis grow, though no updates have been provided on the Thai individual allegedly involved in that incident

From the OG Lab newsroom perspective, this case highlights ongoing enforcement challenges as Thailand navigates the evolving landscape of cannabis regulation. With large-scale illegal grows still being uncovered, the industry faces mounting pressure to clarify licensing and compliance requirements. This development signals that, despite recent reforms, authorities remain vigilant against unlicensed cannabis cultivation, making regulatory transparency and lawful operation critical for industry stakeholders
