Pew Research Center Poll Shows 88% of Americans Support Marijuana Legalization in Some Form

A new Pew Research Center poll finds that 88 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana for either medical or recreational use, signaling ongoing national momentum for cannabis reform

Key Points

  • 1Pew Research Center survey shows 55% of U.S. adults support both recreational and medical marijuana legalization
  • 2An additional 33% favor legalizing marijuana for medical use only, while just 11% support keeping it illegal
  • 3Majority support for some form of legalization exists across both Democratic and Republican voters
  • 4Support for full legalization is highest among adults under 30 and among Black Americans
  • 5Americans remain divided over whether their state cannabis laws are too strict, not strict enough, or appropriate

A new Pew Research Center survey reveals that a sweeping majority of Americans now support marijuana legalization, with the landscape shifting dramatically over recent decades. According to the data published this week, 55 percent of U.S. adults favor legalizing cannabis for both recreational and medical purposes, while an additional 33 percent back legalization for medical use only. Just 11 percent of respondents believe marijuana should remain illegal under all circumstances, highlighting a stark decline in prohibitionist sentiment

The poll uncovers broad bipartisan support for cannabis reform, though significant divides remain between political affiliations. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, two-thirds endorse legalization for any use, while 27 percent prefer restricting it to medical use. Republicans are more divided: 44 percent support full legalization, and 39 percent favor medical use only. “Notably, conservative and moderate Democrats (56%) and moderate and liberal Republicans (54%) express similar levels of support,” Pew noted in its analysis

Support for marijuana reform is also stratified by age, race, and ethnicity. Young adults under 30 show the highest enthusiasm, with 63 percent in favor of full legalization. Black Americans (61 percent) are slightly more likely than white Americans (58 percent) to support broad legalization, while support among Hispanic Americans stands at 45 percent and among Asian Americans at 34 percent. These figures reflect shifting social attitudes and the growing normalization of cannabis across diverse communities

The survey also probed Americans' views on their own states' marijuana laws, revealing a complex picture. While 36 percent believe their state’s cannabis regulations are “about right,” 21 percent think they are too strict and 19 percent say they are not strict enough. In states where recreational and medical use are permitted, nearly half (47 percent) feel the laws are appropriate, but in states with total prohibition, 40 percent say the laws are too strict. “Americans are divided over whether marijuana laws in their state are too strict or not strict enough,” Pew reported

Other recent national polls reinforce these findings, demonstrating a consistent trend toward greater acceptance of cannabis. A separate YouGov survey found that 59 percent of U.S. adults want legalization, and a Gallup poll last year put support at 64 percent. Attitudes about the morality of cannabis use have also shifted, with more Americans now viewing marijuana consumption as morally acceptable—or not a moral issue at all—than other debated activities. “Americans’ views on marijuana legalization have held relatively steady since 2019,” Pew concluded

With 88 percent of Americans now supporting some form of legalization, the momentum for reform is undeniable. OG Lab notes this sustained public backing is likely to keep pressure on lawmakers at both state and federal levels, making cannabis policy a pivotal issue in upcoming elections and legislative sessions
