Thai Political Debate Highlights Conservative Cannabis Policy and Vaping Crackdown

Thai political candidates at a major youth debate in Bangkok reaffirmed medical-only cannabis policies and strict e-cigarette enforcement, signaling a conservative direction for future drug regulation

Key Points

  • 1Bhumjaithai Party candidate Lori called for cannabis use to be restricted to medical purposes only
  • 2Lori opposed full cannabis liberalization and instead advocated for clean energy liberalization
  • 3Pheu Thai Party candidate Boonyakorn Damrongrat reaffirmed a crackdown on e-cigarettes, citing health concerns
  • 4Both parties expressed a preference for conservative regulatory approaches to cannabis and vaping products

At a recent youth-focused political debate in Bangkok, representatives from major Thai political parties voiced strong opinions on the direction of cannabis policy and the regulation of e-cigarettes. The forum, titled “The next wave: Listening to the New Generation,” featured candidates from 10 parties and provided a platform for emerging leaders to outline their stances on issues impacting Thailand’s youth and broader society

Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, known as Lori and a candidate for Bhumjaithai Party, firmly rejected full cannabis liberalization, advocating instead for a strictly medical-use framework. Drawing on the legacy of former Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s regulations, he emphasized the need for medical certification to purchase and use cannabis for treatment. “I do not agree with complete cannabis liberalization. We support using cannabis for public health purposes and only with a doctor's certification,” Lori stated, underscoring a preference for what he described as a 'cool conservative' approach

Lori also argued that policy liberalization should be redirected toward sectors like clean energy, which he believes would yield more tangible benefits for Thai households. “If we open up clean energy, it could lower household electricity bills to less than three baht per unit, which is a good thing,” he added. Conversely, he dismissed the idea of legalizing entertainment complexes and casinos, warning of the risks related to money laundering and illicit capital

On the subject of e-cigarettes, Boonyakorn Damrongrat, a candidate from the Pheu Thai Party, reiterated her party’s hardline stance against vaping products. She noted that e-cigarettes remain illegal in Thailand and highlighted the dangers of easy access for young people. “Although it is a personal right, it can have a health impact and become a burden on the public health system,” she remarked, affirming Pheu Thai’s commitment to strict enforcement, including border controls and import crackdowns

These positions reflect a broader conservative trend in Thai drug and public health policy, particularly as the country grapples with the social and legal implications of recent cannabis decriminalization. The debate revealed clear generational and party divides, but also a consensus on the need for robust regulatory frameworks to protect youth and public health. According to Matichon, both parties are committed to learning from past policy outcomes and adjusting their approaches accordingly

From the OG Lab newsroom perspective, this debate signals that Thailand’s cannabis policy is unlikely to move toward broader adult-use legalization in the near future, with leading parties favoring medical-only frameworks and increased regulation. Industry stakeholders and patients should closely monitor legislative developments, as shifting political winds may impact access, enforcement, and the future of Thailand’s cannabis and vaping markets
