Thai Political Leader Tawee Sodsong Highlights Major Drug Seizures and Calls for Stricter Cannabis Controls

In a recent policy announcement, Police Colonel Tawee Sodsong, leader of the Prachachat Party and prime ministerial candidate, underscored his commitment to combating Thailand's drug crisis with a strong track record. Speaking on January 7, Tawee detailed his achievements during his tenure as Minister of Justice, where his administration seized over 900 million methamphetamine pills and more than 40,000 kilograms of crystal meth, far surpassing previous annual averages. Tawee pointed to the transnational nature of Thailand's drug issues, noting that large-scale narcotics operations are often orchestrated by major traffickers from neighboring countries. He advocated for legislation restricting cannabis use strictly to medical purposes and called for kratom to be reinstated as a controlled substance, requiring official permission for use. "Cannabis must be used for medical purposes only, and kratom should return to the list of narcotics, with usage allowed only by authorization," he said, signaling a tougher stance on emerging drug trends amid ongoing debates over decriminalization and public health in Thailand

Tawee highlighted the impact of the drug trade on southern border provinces, warning that unchecked narcotics flows risk turning the region into a hub for illicit activities.
