Thai Politician Tawee Sodsong Vows Strict Crackdown on Cannabis and Kratom

Thai political leader Tawee Sodsong, head of the Prachachat Party and prime ministerial candidate, has announced a renewed commitment to combating drug abuse in Thailand, with a special focus on tightening control over cannabis and kratom. Speaking on February 4, 2026, Tawee emphasized that addressing the drug issue is a top priority for his party, particularly in the southern border provinces where the problem has become acute. Tawee highlighted the severity of the drug crisis in border areas such as Sungai Kolok and Tak Bai, which have been labeled as drug trafficking hotspots by neighboring Malaysia. "They consider Sungai Kolok and Tak Bai as the capital of methamphetamine, which is very shameful," Tawee said. He pointed to the Golden Triangle as the primary source of illicit drugs entering Thailand, often with the complicity of influential figures and politicians who funnel profits back into the political system

The Prachachat Party leader outlined a strategy that includes rigorous law enforcement and financial measures targeting drug traffickers. "If the Prachachat Party is in government, we will take serious action against drug dealers, using anti-money laundering mechanisms to address the problem thoroughly," Tawee stated. He also stressed the importance of restoring trust with neighboring countries by eradicating drug networks and ensuring that Thailand is no longer seen as a haven for narcotics

In addition to tackling hard drugs, Tawee called for a reversal of recent policy shifts that have relaxed controls over kratom and cannabis. He argued that the widespread availability of these substances has harmed Thai communities, especially youth, and proposed that both kratom and cannabis be reclassified as narcotics. "If we return to government, kratom and cannabis must be classified as narcotics again and strictly controlled. Assets from offenders must be seized, and appropriate rehabilitation processes must be in place for users," Tawee asserted. He recounted his previous efforts as Minister of Justice to ban the sale of kratom near educational institutions to protect young people
