Thailand Expands Universal Healthcare to Include Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy

Thailand will begin offering gender-affirming hormone therapy through its universal healthcare system this week, improving access to safe treatment for transgender individuals at 50 facilities nationwide

Key Points

  • 1Thailand's universal healthcare scheme will cover gender-affirming hormone therapy starting this week
  • 2Fifty healthcare facilities nationwide will provide eight types of hormone-related medications
  • 3The programme includes health screenings, mental health counselling, and laboratory tests for those undergoing hormone therapy
  • 4Officials emphasize the need for professional supervision due to possible physical and psychological side effects

Thailand's universal healthcare scheme will now offer gender-affirming hormone therapy, marking a significant step for transgender healthcare access in the country. Deputy government spokeswoman Ploythalay Laksameesaengjan confirmed that the programme will begin this week, aligning with Pride Month celebrations and ongoing efforts to improve legal recognition and support for LGBTQ+ communities

According to Ploythalay, "The programme is intended to help transgender people access hormone treatment safely within the healthcare system." The National Health Security Office has finalized procurement of hormone therapy medications, with 50 healthcare facilities across Thailand set to begin distribution starting Wednesday. The scheme includes eight hormone-related medicines categorized as female hormones (oral and topical), injectable male hormones, oral androgen blockers, and central hormone-suppressing injections

In addition to hormone medications, eligible individuals will have access to health screenings, mental health counselling, and laboratory tests to monitor hormone levels, as well as liver, kidney, and metabolic health. Ploythalay also emphasized the importance of medical oversight, noting that hormone therapy "can have physical and psychological side effects if not properly managed."

OG Lab notes that this expanded access to hormone therapy under the national healthcare system is likely to improve health outcomes and safety for transgender residents and visitors in Thailand, reinforcing the country's position as a regional leader in LGBTQ+ health rights
