This figure marks a 6 percent increase compared to last year, underscoring the festival’s growing appeal to both Thai and international travelers. The surge in activity highlights Songkran’s evolution into a premier global cultural event
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool emphasized the collaborative effort behind the festival’s success, noting the synergy between government, private sector, and local communities. “The strong performance of Songkran 2026 highlights the global appeal of Thailand’s cultural charm and reflects strong collaboration across government, private sector, and communities in elevating the festival to an international level,” she stated. Major celebration areas in Bangkok, such as Silom Road, Siam Square, and Khao San Road, experienced consistently high attendance, while flagship events like the Maha Songkran World Water Festival at Benjakitti Park drew over 108,000 visitors, split almost evenly between domestic and international guests
Regional festivities contributed significantly to the overall impact, with destinations like Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya attracting crowds for its signature “Songkran with Elephants” event. In northern and northeastern provinces, traditional rituals and cultural parades reinforced the festival’s deep-rooted heritage, while dedicated water-play streets fostered community engagement. Southern provinces, particularly Songkhla, saw tourism activity surge, with the Sadao border crossing alone recording more than 36,000 crossings and hotel occupancy rates reaching 80 percent. Border towns such as Betong and Su-ngai Kolok extended the celebration with evening events, positioning themselves as emerging destinations for cultural and nighttime tourism
International arrivals for Songkran 2026 are projected to reach approximately 500,000, a 4 percent year-on-year increase, generating around 8.1 billion Baht. Domestic trips are expected to total 5.96 million, up 7 percent from last year, contributing an estimated 22.25 billion Baht.
