Thailand is set to mark the 2026 Thai New Year with two major cultural events in Bangkok, showcasing both tradition and modern creativity. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026, to be held at Benchakitti Park from 11–15 April, and the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival 2026 at Lumphini Park from 11–30 April. These celebrations not only honor Songkran's recent recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity but also aim to boost Thailand's profile as a global festival destination

Leading officials, including TAT Deputy Governor Nat Kruthasoot and Commander of Tourist Police Division 1 Pol. Maj. Gen. Danu Klamsum, attended the press launch alongside notable Thai artists and celebrities. Mr. Nat emphasized the strategic focus behind the festivities: "These celebrations embody TAT’s Value over Volume direction, where cultural festivals are elevated into high-impact experiences that deliver quality tourism revenue and lasting value for Thai communities." He highlighted the integration of heritage, contemporary creativity, and international engagement as key factors in strengthening Songkran’s global appeal

The Maha Songkran World Water Festival will feature a diverse program, including a grand opening, cultural parades, live performances, a drone light show, and zones representing all five regions of Thailand. Visitors can participate in hands-on activities such as sand pagoda building, Buddha image bathing, and enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with dedicated entertainment areas. Meanwhile, the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival will connect traditional Songkran customs with modern art, displaying six large-scale sculptures and hosting art talks, workshops, markets, and interactive games at Lumphini Park

Beyond Bangkok, TAT is supporting Songkran celebrations across Thailand’s regions, with events planned in Chiang Mai, Surat Thani (Ko Samui), Phuket, and other key provinces. According to TAT News, tourism revenue during 11–15 April is projected at 30.35 billion Baht, a 6% increase from the previous year. International arrivals are forecast to reach 500,000, generating 8.1 billion Baht, while domestic trips are expected to hit nearly 6 million, contributing over 22 billion Baht to the economy
