Sri Lankan Court Detains Senior Monk Over 110 Kg Cannabis Smuggling From Thailand

Sri Lankan authorities have detained a senior Buddhist monk for seven days after allegations surfaced that he orchestrated the smuggling of 110 kilograms of cannabis from Thailand. The monk appeared before a special judge at Negombo Magistrates Court, where his continued detention was authorized to facilitate further investigation. The case follows the arrest of 22 young monks at Bandaranaike International Airport, where police discovered large quantities of cannabis and hashish hidden in their luggage arriving from Thailand

Investigators told the court that the senior monk was apprehended under Section 54(1) of the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance for his suspected role in aiding and abetting drug trafficking involving restricted substances. Police reported seizing three mobile phones from the suspect, with initial findings suggesting that a WhatsApp group used to coordinate the smuggling operation was managed by the monk. A forensic medical examination also revealed the presence of illegal drugs in the monk’s system, according to authorities

During the court hearing, the defense stated that they would not seek bail at this stage but might consider it in the future. When asked for his statement, the accused monk told the court the incident occurred due to “ignorance.” The judge subsequently approved his continued detention to allow investigators to expand their inquiry into the trafficking network
