Bangkok Restaurant Denies Refusing Thai Baht Amid Yuan Payment Claims

A Bangkok restaurant has denied allegations of only accepting Chinese yuan after local authorities found no evidence of illegal payment practices during inspections prompted by a viral social media claim

Key Points

  • 1A TikTok video alleged a Bangkok restaurant refused Thai baht and demanded yuan
  • 2Local inspectors found the restaurant had a Thai bank QR code for payments
  • 3Staff attributed the confusion to a temporary QR system malfunction, not policy
  • 4No illegal operations or yuan-only payments were found by authorities
  • 5Officials plan to issue stickers certifying businesses accept Thai baht payments

A restaurant in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district has refuted viral claims that it only accepts Chinese yuan, following a TikTok video that sparked widespread discussion. The video, posted by a Chinese resident in Thailand on May 25, alleged that a noodle shop refused Thai baht and required payment in yuan, raising concerns about proper business practices in what is often called 'Bangkok’s next Chinatown.' In response, local authorities quickly dispatched inspectors to survey establishments along Pracha Rat Bamphen Road to ensure legal compliance with payment regulations

According to Sombat Kruakeeratitham, the Huai Khwang district chief, inspectors found that the restaurant in question had a Thai bank QR code available for customer payments at the counter. Staff explained that a temporary malfunction in the QR payment system on the day of the incident led them to ask for cash, but the customer did not have any. When the QR code was retried, it functioned properly, and staff emphasized that no extra fees were charged and yuan was never accepted. The owner, a Chinese national, expressed his distress over the negative publicity and maintained, 'the restaurant has never accepted payments in yuan and all revenue is properly transferred into a Thai bank account.'

No evidence of illegal activity was discovered during the inspections, and officials have not received similar complaints in the past. To build trust among consumers, authorities plan to introduce certification stickers for each business, stating they 'accept payments in Thai baht 100%,' Mr. Sombat confirmed. District officials routinely engage with the 79 legally registered restaurants in the area to ensure operational transparency and adherence to local guidelines

For the international community and expatriates in Bangkok, this incident underscores the importance of transparency in business operations, particularly in multicultural neighborhoods.
