Key Points
- 1Phuket Airport has opened its first international arrivals autogates for incoming passengers
- 2Plans are in place to increase autogates from 10 to 21 and reduce manned counters from 24 to 16
- 3Autogates are currently available only for travelers with e-passports
- 4The airport's general manager stated the upgrades will ease congestion and improve service standards
Phuket International Airport has introduced its first set of automated gates for arriving international passengers, aiming to streamline immigration procedures and reduce wait times. Until now, only departing travelers could use autogates, while arrivals were required to pass through traditional manned counters. The new system, launched on Saturday, is expected to address longstanding complaints from air travelers about lengthy lines at immigration
According to airport general manager Monchai Tanode, the airport currently operates 10 arrivals autogates, but plans are in place to more than double this number to 21. In conjunction with the expansion, the number of manned immigration counters will be reduced from 24 to 16. "More autogates would ease immigration congestion and raise the standard of the airport," Monchai said, highlighting the airport's commitment to improving passenger experience
At this stage, the autogates are available exclusively to travelers holding e-passports, a move designed to speed up processing for tech-ready visitors. The timeline for the full rollout of additional autogates has not yet been specified, but airport officials are optimistic that the changes will significantly boost efficiency and satisfaction among international arrivals
For Koh Samui residents and visitors who often connect through Phuket, these upgrades signal a broader trend toward smarter, faster travel across Thailand’s airports. OG Lab notes that as regional airports modernize, travelers can expect smoother journeys and less time spent in queues, making island hopping and international arrivals more convenient
